Writing was always something I loved doing. I was able to get personal and lay it all out there. To me, writing is an outlet, to let others know what you are feeling. It was a voice when I felt like I didn’t have one. Throughout this semester, I was able to use writing to not only transfer my emotions on paper, but others as well. To start it all off, we must go to the very first assignment, which I personality thought was the hardest.
The Transcultural Interview, this essay pushed me to be more social and ask the hard questions. When reading the description of this assignment, I thought it was interesting. I was more afraid to talk to someone about their views on something personal, without making them feel overwhelmed. I also, wanted to capture the person’s emotions on paper, I wanted to be open to a different perspective that wasn’t mine. I was fascinated by what I learned from ones personal stories to Immigration. It made me think about the world we live in today and inspired me to write about this problem. At first it was difficult to find a general theme, there was so much I could write about. Reading through the Transcript, Listing to the recording of the interview, I realized that there was one main thing I could talk about. Shed a light on a personal Immigration story and how it affected my subject personally. In this essay the subject “…started to talk about how good education was in the United States, how he can find financial stability and a better job. He was happy. That’s until he needed to go back home. The environment in the United States was dangerous, too dangerous for this family to grow in, they moved back to the Dominican Republic. His voice was shaky, as if he felt the same emotions he did when he realized it was time to pack up and go. ” Reading this back made me think about how my subject’s face changed into a sad one, how moving from country to country really affected him and his family. Something that my subject said really stuck with me: “There has to be a way that these people that have been here for so many years are able to get some sort of immigration status in the United States and not be separated from their kids and family.” During this essay I wanted to make sure that while reading this, you’re able to sense the emotions behind the words. I didn’t want to sound bias in this writing, especially since this writing piece was more on my subject and not about my view.
In the Online Community essay I had to observe the way people interact in the web. The specific online community I looked into was the fandom of Gabi Demartino, the way the fans talk to each other and support one another as well as Gabi, made me think about a big family, an online family. In this essay I had to get my research from a different database. Learning about the right type of websites to get research from in school made it difficult to find the right source of database for this essay. I had to ask for help to see if the youtube comment section was okay to use. In certain types of writing Social media networks are fine to use. Something I learned this semester was, your database changes depending on the type of writing that you’re conducting. This ranges from Online communities to Literature review. Which connects to the next essay which was the most research I’ve done for a paper so far. The literature review essay included many different databases, summarizing them and finding out the main points was hard to do. In this essay I had to do a lot of revisions, making sure that the right words were written to get my point across.
One thing that was difficult was writing to make sure that my audience knew that the writing being read was intended for them. To do this I had to think about what I want people to get out of my writing and who I want to read my writing. “How will they best receive the information?” was the question that helped me shape my theme in all of my writings. Especially the literature review. I was able to connect my major’s intentions to my writing class. It was fun to write about psychology and the way that something we’re all passionate about can help us in the long-run. Writing for the social sciences helped me broaden my view on today’s issues, it sparked an interest in these world issues. For me to write about these topics, I was able to defend my view with not just facts but with other evidence done by professionals. All my writing has grown from my personal stories, to using my voice to reach out to others about certain issues. I’m glad I was able to learn about the power of writing in this class. Writing is the chance to change one person’s view. Writing means the truth, when no one else wants to expose it. With writing one is able to touch the hearts of many, inform the right minds, and persuade the most influential people.
